Abu Dhabi was founded as a permanent settlement in 1761 by the Bani Yas tribe in search of fresh water, and the ruling Al Nahyan family relocated there in 1793. It grew from a small fishing settlement into the capital of the United Arab Emirates after the union formed in 1971.
