Istanbul's name comes from the Greek phrase "eis tin polin," meaning "to the city" — an informal way locals referred to the great capital, which evolved into the modern name under Ottoman rule. Before that, it was known as Byzantium and later Constantinople, named for the Roman Emperor Constantine.
