Johannesburg was founded in 1886 after gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand reef, and within just a decade it had grown into South Africa's largest city, overtaking the much older Cape Town. It has remained the country's economic and industrial heart ever since, and its history is closely tied to the apartheid era and Nelson Mandela's struggle.
