Mogadishu was already a busy Indian Ocean trading port by the 1st century CE, and it later flourished as the seat of the Sultanate of Mogadishu from the 10th to 16th centuries. During that golden age it was one of the wealthiest cities on the East African coast, known for its textile industry and gold trade, and a key stop linking Africa, Arabia, and India.
