Originally known as “Yathrib,” the city was renamed “Madinat al-Nabi” (the Prophet's city), later “Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah” (the Enlightened City), after Prophet Muhammad's migration there in 622 CE — an honor marking it as the place that welcomed and illuminated Islam's message.
