Day 1: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the Royal Opera House
Start the morning (before 11am) at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the world's most beautiful mosques, with its massive chandelier and hand-woven Persian carpet that was the largest of its kind when the mosque opened. Entry is free, but respect the modest dress code: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, hair covered for women. In the afternoon, head to the Royal Opera House Muscat, an Omani-Italian architectural gem — and if an evening performance happens to align with your visit, book a ticket for a different kind of cultural experience.
Day 2: Muttrah — the souq and the corniche
Spend the day in Muttrah, the historic harbor-front district. Muttrah Souq is one of the oldest covered markets in the Gulf, a maze of alleys packed with silver, frankincense, textiles, and spices. After shopping, walk the Muttrah Corniche at sunset, where the historic Al-Jalali and Al-Mirani forts overlook the harbor from either side, and the famous Fish Roundabout sculpture is a favorite photo spot.
Day 3: Old Muscat and the museums
Head to Old Muscat, the historic administrative heart with Muscat Gate and Al Alam Palace (the Sultan's ceremonial palace, viewed from outside) with its distinctive gold-and-blue columns. Visit Bait Al Zubair Museum for authentic family artifacts explaining traditional Omani heritage, or the modern, interactive Oman Across Ages Museum if you're traveling with children.
Day 4: Qurum, Al Mouj, and modern coastal life
Shift to Muscat's modern side: Qurum Beach for a morning walk, then Al Mouj Marina for upscale shopping and waterfront dining, and possibly a short boat trip to spot dolphins in the Gulf of Oman — a morning activity offered by several reputable local operators.
Trip tips: getting between these areas requires a car, since Muscat is very spread out, and booking Oman Across Ages Museum tickets ahead saves time during peak season (October-April). Give the Muttrah day extra breathing room — it's the part of the trip most worth wandering slowly.
