Santorini's current name was given by Venetian merchants and crusaders in the 13th century, who called it “Santa Irini” — “Saint Irene” — after a chapel dedicated to her on the island. Its ancient Greek name was “Thera,” named after Theras, the Spartan colonist who founded the island's first settlement.
