The city rose on the site of the ancient Phoenician and Roman settlement of Icosium before the Zirid prince Bologhine ibn Ziri refounded it in 944 CE. It later became a powerful naval base during Ottoman rule, and after independence grew into modern Algeria's capital — its old Casbah still preserves a unique architectural character recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
